Bookish Roundup — May, 2018

May 2018 Roundup

Y’all, May is over and I for one am a happy little camper about that. What can I say? May was an odd month for me in terms of reading. Things moved very slooooowly, and then they sped up toward the end of the month as I busted out of my late Spring slump like a crazy woman!

Indeed, by mid-May I had read a mere five books. Five. So, so sad, don’t you think? For me, anyway. Then I rejoiced as I joined the Bout of Books 22 Readathon – surely I would redeem myself by reading all kinds of books during that week-long period, right? Wrong. I managed only one and a half. NOT EVEN TWO FULL BOOKS, y’all. Granted, all kinds of emergency dental and medical appointments kept creeping out of the woodwork during that time, but still – I was so disappointed in myself.

Thankfully, I redeemed myself over the final ten days of May by reading seven books within that time period. I repeat: the bulk of May’s reading occurred during the last ten days of the month! I don’t know what was going on with me, but at least I upped the count of books read to a total of thirteen with that little spurt at the end. Let’s take a look at what I did manage to get under my belt last month…

Books I Read In May:

I was so excited that FOUR books I’d been anxiously awaiting were released in May. I was thrilled with two of them and happy with the other two, so it was win-win for me. A fun read in particular was Puddin’ by Julie Murphy, as I read it along with three of my book club buddies which made it not only a blast, but much more thought-provoking and meaningful. I even managed to sneak in my non-fiction read for the month by reading 10% Happier by Dan Harris right before the end of May! Not a bad read, but I’m much more looking forward to its sequel, Meditation for Fidgety Skeptics.

I have high hopes for my reading goals in June; at the very least I would like to read more than FIVE books by the middle of the month. Do you think I can do it? I sincerely hope so. I guess we will find out with June’s Bookish Roundup, y’all. Until then, Happy Reading!!

what did you read in may, friends?

Have you participated in a readathon before? If not, would you ever consider doing so?

Bookish Roundup – August, 2017

August Roundup Pic

Fall is almost here, y’all, and I’m soooo excited! Fall is my favorite season of the year: the cooler temperatures and crisp air does my body good – as long as that sun keeps shining, anyway. Gotta have my sunshine, y’all. Despite the hot, hot summer we had here in Nebraska, August was surprisingly mild as far as temperatures went – most days were in the 80’s or even below. If we have to have Summer, that’s the kind of weather I like. Because of the cooler temps I was able to spend more time outside reading on my porch – one of my fave places to read.

It was a CRAZY month, though, y’all. I participated in the Bout of Books 20 Readathon, which was so much fun. Unfortunately, right smack in the middle of the readathon I wound up on the hospital’s ICU ward for two days! I was in the hospital for a total of four days, which really cramped my reading style – but I didn’t let it keep me down. I finished out the readathon, anyway. Books for the win, y’all!!

I found some great books in August, I’ll tell you what. Twenty-one of them, to be exact. Let’s take a look:

So many of these books were winners, y’all, but one stood out by a long shot. The Seven Rules of Elvira Carr by Frances Maynard will definitely be included in my top books of 2017. It was beautiful and sweet and funny and sad, and Elvira Carr stole my heart almost as soon as I opened the book. It is a must-read, and I expect a full report from each of you!!

It’s another mild Summer day today, y’all, and I’m off to read on my porch again while Poppie and The Boy gorge themselves on Saturday college football (ugh). I hope you have a wonderful September and until I see you again, Happy Reading!!

What was your fave read in August?

Bout of Books 20: Day 7 Update (& Final Thoughts)

BoB20-200x200

We made it, y’all! Bout of Books 20 has come to a close, and what a doozy it was! I read, I laughed, I cried… I went to the ICU. But you can’t win them all, I suppose.

My original goals included reading 4 to 6 hours a day, and reading 1 book per day. I didn’t meet those terms, but I did do fairly well considering my extenuating circumstances – and had a blast to boot! Let’s take a look at Day 7’s stats:

Total Time I Read:

4 hours, 37 minutes

Number of Books I Read:

1.5

Books I Read:

Total Number of Books I’ve Read:

5.25 books

In closing, I will have to say that this was definitely an eventful week for me (not just because of BoB!) and while I’d like to have skipped over some of it, I’m so glad I got to be a part of Bout of Books. I had so much fun interacting with all of the great people reading along with me, and can’t wait to do it again in January!!

August has nearly come to a close, and you know what that means: it’s almost time for another Bookish Roundup! Stay tuned later in the week and until then, Happy Reading, y’all!!

Bout of Books 20 Update: Days 3 & 4

Oh, lawd, y’all. Things are going crazy over here in Pathologically Literate Land, that is for sure!! Hence the dual update, two days late…

Before I begin my storytelling, let’s take a look at Day 3’s stats:

TOTAL TIME I READ:

     6 hours

NUMBER OF BOOKS I READ:

     1.5 books

BOOKS I READ:

  • The Garden of Small Beginnings by Abbi Waxman
  • A Stranger in the House by Shari Lapena

TOTAL NUMBER OF BOOKS I’VE READ:

    3 books

Day 3 was an awesome day for reading, y’all. The day zoomed by so smoothly and I had plenty of time for relaxing and reading. 6 hours, y’all!! I hit my top goal – yay!!

Unfortunately, things took a downward turn that evening after bedtime. Due to some health issues, I had to go to the ER and was admitted into the ICU, where I am still stubbornly hanging around. The worst part of the last two nights and 1 1/2 days, however: no books have been read, y’all. THAT is the true tragedy here!

I’m super-bummed that the amazing fun I had planned this week for Bout of Books 20 has been so unpleasantly disrupted. I’m currently writing this post on my phone (so we’ll see how it turns out!) and don’t have any idea if I’m going to be getting any decent reading done while I’m in here or not. You can all bet your sweet little cheeks that I’ll be trying my best, though!!

Good luck to all of you Bout of Bookers out there, and until next time, y’all: Happy Reading!!

Bout of Books 20: Day 2 Update

BoB20-200x200Well. Well, well, well. So, Day Two of Bout of Books 20 unfortunately did NOT go as planned or expected. My reading time yesterday was abysmal (compared to what I usually read). I’m really going to have to pick up the pacce the rest of the week to redeem myself!

Excuse time: excuses, excuses, I know, I know… But! The Boy had a couple appointments yesterday that took forever. I was also feeling under the weather (bad sushi??) and wound up taking a nap in the middle of the day as well as going to bed earlier than usual. All of that added up to a poor, poor day of reading for me!!

Let’s take a look at those embarrassing stats that I’m talking about:

Total Time I Read:

1 hour, 23 minutes

Number of Books I Read:

.25

Books I Read:

Total Number of Books I’ve Read:

2.5

I’m so hoping that Day 3 is going to be a much better day!! I do have to accompany my father to a doctor’s appointment but other than that, I’m free and clear. It’s go time, y’all. Go. Time. If you’re participating in Bout of Books this time around, good luck to you!! If you’re just an observer, then Happy Reading to you!!

Bout of Books 20: Day 1 Update

BoB20-200x200

Day One of Bout of Books 20 has passed, and it went great!! I had tons of fun pushing  myself and really enjoyed keeping in touch with my friends who are also participating in BoB. I’m having a good feeling about the coming week, y’all – a good, good feeling.

Let’s take a look at my stats:

Total Time I Read:

5 hours, 4 minutes

Number of Books I Read:

2.25 books

Books I Read:

Total Number of Books I’ve Read:

2.25

I’ve gotten a late start to Day 2 and The Boy has a couple of appointments today, so hopefully that won’t drag me behind my goals too badly. Wish me luck, y’all!! And good luck to all of you Bout of Bookers out there as well!!

Bout of Books 20: Goals

bout-of-books

Bout of Books 20 is almost here, y’all!! An entire week devoted to reading my little heart out – what more could I ask for, amiright? If you would like to join me in this pursuit, you can still sign up here.

This will be my second time participating in Bout of Books. The first round was Bout of Books 10, way back in 2014. It was my first readathon ever, and I had tons of fun! I’m even more excited this time around because I won’t be going it alone – several friends from one of my book clubs will be joining me, and I just know we are going to rock this thing! I also plan to participate in some of the challenges and giveaways, which I did not do the first time. I am all in this time around, y’all!!

Now, on to my goals. Please keep in mind that as I am also currently preparing for our new homeschool year, some days may prove more challenging than others…

Time Devoted to Reading

I will be dedicating the entire week to reading.

My Goals

    • Read between 4-6 hours each day
    • Participate in at least one challenge
    • Keep in touch with friends also participating in BoB 20
    • Have a blast!!

Books to Read

    • Including, but not limited to:
      • All Our Wrong Todays by Elan Mastai
      • The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood
      • The Lost Ones by Sheena Kamal
      • A Stranger in the House by Shari Lapena
      • The Personal History of Rachel Dupree by Ann Weisgarber
      • The Sisterhood of Blackberry Corner by Andrea Smith
      • This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales

All of the books I’ve selected are library check-outs. I think it’s a good mix: my August book club pick, a classic, a couple of new releases, some African-American fiction, and a little YA to finish things off. If I’m able to keep up with my goal of reading 4-6 hours a day, then I will of course have to add books to this list. And it is highly possible that one or more of the books I’ve listed won’t strike my fancy on the day I pick it up and I will have to find a replacement – I am most definitely a mood reader, and can’t always rely on planned lists like this.

That’s all I’ve got for you today, folks. I’m super-excited to get started on Monday morning and will keep you totally in the loop with daily updates here on the blog and on the Pathologically Literate Facebook Page. Until then, y’all, Happy Reading!!

For those of you who aren’t sure what Bout of Books is, here is a short(ish) explanation:

The Bout of Books read-a-thon is organized by Amanda Shofner and Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal. It is a week long read-a-thon that begins 12:01am Monday, August 21st and runs through Sunday, August 27th in whatever time zone you are in. Bout of Books is low-pressure. I’m super excited to be joining in this time, y’all. I participated in Bout of Books 10 way back in 2014, and liked it a lot, but life and homeschool and other less important things got in the way and I never got back into the groove to participate in any of the following challenges. I’m pleased to be making my Reading Life more of a priority, and this will be the second reading challenge I’ve participated in in 2017. Yay, me!!

Do you like to read? Do you know how to read? Then you should join me!! Yay! See you in 13 days!!
