Review: Tempting Fate by Jane Green

tempting-fateFrom Jane Green, the New York Times bestselling author of such beloved novels as Jemima J, The Beach House, Another Piece of My Heart, comes an enthralling and emotional story about how much we really understand the temptations that can threaten even the most idyllic of relationships….
Gabby and Elliott have been happily married for eighteen years. They have two teenaged daughters. They have built a life together. Forty-three year old Gabby is the last person to have an affair. She can’t relate to the way her friends desperately try to cling to the beauty and allure of their younger years…And yet, she too knows her youth is quickly slipping away. She could never imagine how good it would feel to have a handsome younger man show interest in her—until the night it happens. Matt makes Gabby feel sparkling, fascinating, alive—something she hasn’t felt in years. What begins as a long-distance friendship soon develops into an emotional affair as Gabby discovers her limits and boundaries are not where she expects them to be. Intoxicated, Gabby has no choice but to step ever deeper into the allure of attraction and attention, never foreseeing the life-changing consequences that lie ahead. If she makes one wrong move she could lose everything—and find out what really matters most.

A heartfelt and complex story, Tempting Fate will have readers gripped until they reach the very last page, and thinking about the characters long after they put the book down.” – Publisher Summary

When I was in my twenties, I went through what you could call a major Chick Lit phase. One of my absolute favorite authors during that time was Jane Green. Jemima J., Bookends, Mr. Maybe… Yep, I loved me some Jane Green back in the day. Then she wrote Babyville and The Other Woman, and Jane and I drifted apart. The magic was gone. I tried to rekindle the fire a couple of times thereafter, but Green had since moved to America and her writing style, and characters, had changed into something I just didn’t jive with. Until now. Tempting Fate by Jane Green is a well-crafted tale about the implosion of a twenty year marriage due to unforeseen temptation.

Gabby, 43, has been married to Elliot for twenty years. He is the love of her life, and she is the first person to tell you that she would be the last person to ever have an affair. But. But then she meets Matt while out with the girls. Matt is ten years younger, rich, and gorgeous. They hit it off instantly and begin a long-distance flirtation via email and text. Gabby sees him when he comes to town, and the last time this happens, the family happens to be away. Matt comes a-calling and hanky-panky ensues. What follows is the destruction of everything Gabby has held dear for the last twenty years. Will Elliot forgive her? Is there any chance of putting her family back together? With some shocking twists and turns, you will devour this novel from beginning to end, anxious to reach the answer.

While at face value one may think this novel is merely about an illicit infidelity, there are in fact many themes explored here: marriage, motherhood, friendship, betrayal, adultery. I found the theme of betrayal to be woven in throughout the novel, and not just as Gabby’s affair. Betrayal is not just infidelity. Betrayal can be a husband going against his wife’s wishes and cutting off ties to a dream she holds dear. It can be a friend choosing to turn her back in one’s time of greatest need. Green deftly explores the winding paths Gabby’s various relationships take due to her disastrous decision: not just her marriage but her friendships, her relationship with her daughters, and her already-troubled relationship with her own mother. As you follow along this emotional journey, you will experience that Jane Green knack for making a reader truly feel what her characters are experiencing.

While Green’s earlier novels were written more for the twenty-something set, Tempting Fate (and her other, more recent novels) are focused on a bit of an older crowd, making her novels appealing to a wider range of readers. If you are a long-time Jane Green fan, you will definitely not want to miss this novel. If you have not yet had the pleasure of reading a Jane Green novel, this is an excellent place to begin.
